Friday Night Bites: Round 1

Studies show that popcorn makes movies 31 percent better.

I’m just kidding. I made that statistic up. But honestly, there’s nothing quite like the dynamic duo that is popcorn and a movie.
With the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Kris has required me to watch every single Star Wars movie.
As more of a good ol’ rom-com lover, this saga has never been on my “must watch” list.
Anyways, Kris was in charge of bringing the movie while I was in charge of providing the snacks.
Obviously popcorn was my first choice. But rather than a run-of-the-mill bag of popcorn, I decided to up the ante and create a savory and sweet popcorn mix that I adapted from The Hungry Girl’s Ultimate Movie-viewing Snack Mix.
Here’s my spin on the recipe:

  • 1 standard- size bag of 94% fat-free popcorn (I used PopSecret)
  • 2 1/2 tbsp. dark chocolate chips
  • 1 1/2 tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • 2 1/2 cups Kellogg’s Special K Protein Cinnamon Brown Sugar Crunch Cereal

 Friday Night Bites: Round 1

Simply pop the popcorn (remember to pay attention so it doesn’t burn!)

Add the dark chocolate chips into a small sealable bag and use a meat mallet to finely crush the chips.

Once your popcorn has cooled, remove any unpopped kernels (nothing says SURPRISE! like cracking a tooth on an unpopped kernel.)

Measure 8 cups and put it in a microwave safe bowl. Save the rest for later enjoyment.
Sprinkle the crushed dark chocolate chips, brown sugar, and cinnamon over the 8 cups of popcorn.
Microwave for 30 seconds, or until the chips have partially melted.
Take out of the microwave and gently mix the popcorn to evenly distribute the sweet goodness.

Finally, add the protein cereal and mix again.
