I know what you’re thinking, “This girl’s nuts (pun semi-intended), there’s way more than three reasons to eat peanut butter.” Keep reading and let me explain!
Let’s take a walk down memory lane, shall we? Growing up, there was nothing quite as satisfying as opening up my lunch box only to reveal that my mom had packed a PB & J. There it was, a sandwich that was comprised of two slices of white bread, a slab of sugary jelly and a layer of the thickest, smoothest peanut butter all mashed into one deliciously-perfect sandwich. That PB & J was so wonderful for two reasons. First, because every sandwich your mom makes is infinitely better than anything you can make on your own and secondly because there was nothing quite like that PB & J that was perfectly chilled with its center smushed together (the center was always the most delicious part of the sandwich). It was almost as if time stopped and all I could see was that sandwich that I was about to devour (Too dramatic? Maybe. Accurate? Yes.).
While others were touting their Lunchables, I was championing the PB & J and to this day I’m doing the same (sorry for the unintentional rhyming).
Aside from the obvious – peanut butter is delicious. As an adult, I’ve come to realize that beyond the delectable taste of peanut butter with virtually anything, it’s also chock-full of health benefits.
Being that I give it my all to live the very best and healthiest life that I possibly can, I make it a point to incorporate peanut butter into my daily diet. Here’s why!
With a label reading anywhere between 180 to 210 calories per serving you might be inclined to think I’m crazy that this food could help a person lose weight. Let me explain. Despite the fact that peanut butter is calorically dense, there’s some science going on behind the scenes that validates peanut butter as a nutritional powerhouse. Peanut butter averages about 2 grams of fiber per serving and around 8 grams of protein as well. Both the fiber and protein work together to help you feel satiated for longer periods of time. So, if you’re looking to stave off cravings while staying on track, incorporate at least a tablespoon of peanut butter to your breakfast or snack – actually, there’s no set time when peanut butter is appropriate because it’s always appropriate!
Fat and fabulous
As a society, we’ve pretty much been groomed to believe that fat is the enemy. By eating fat you’ll in turn get fat. I’m here to help you switch up your line of thinking and embrace fat – good fats, that is. Peanut butter has poly- and monounsaturated fats that are beneficial in lowering a person’s risk of developing heart disease by decreasing the amounts of detrimental cholesterol in the bloodstream. Furthermore, these fats can also help in preventing type 2 diabetes. Did you know that in a serving of peanut butter (2 tablespoons) you’ll get 16 grams of total fat (deep breaths- it’s going to be OK), a little over 7 grams of monounsaturated fat and over 4 grams of polyunsaturated fat. Also, ditch the “reduced fat” varieties. These options include the same amount if not more calories because of the added ingredients that are used to make up for the missing fat.
All aboard the nutrient train
As I mentioned before, peanut butter has fiber, healthy fats and protein. But that’s not all. Peanut butter also has potassium, vitamin E, and vitamin B6 (immunity booster). The list of nutrients goes on and on. In fact, peanut butter also contains magnesium which is great for bone building and aids in muscle recovery.
